When we’re on the road, hitting up local liquor stores is a must for us because it’s a fantastic way to dive into the regional drinks scene. We especially love checking out their sake selections. On our earlier trip, we stumbled upon Yamamoto Sake Shop, a gem of a spot just a short stroll from Sanjo Bridge. Despite its compact size, this place is a treasure trove of top-shelf sake and shochu.

The cool thing about Yamamoto Sake Shop is its tight-knit relationship with local sake brewers. Thanks to this, they often snag some seriously rare, limited-run bottles that you can’t find just anywhere. My routine? I like to scan their lineup, zero in on the unique stuff, and then head straight to the owner. He’s always so pumped to show off his special stock, pulling bottles out onto the counter with a proud grin.
Most of their stash is local sake, but they’ve got some killer rare shochu too, crafted by some of the big names in the sake game. These are not your everyday finds! They also carry a fantastic range of nama (unpasteurized) sake, which is our go-to. We usually grab a bottle to enjoy back at our room that night and ship the rest to wherever we’re bunking down during our travels. No matter how many times we visit, there’s always something new that catches our eye.

The staff know their stuff and are super helpful, always ready to chat about their recommendations and help you find a bottle that hits the right notes for you.
Yamamoto Sake Shop doesn’t just stop at drinks; they’ve got a whole range of sake-related goodies. Think beautifully crafted cups, stylish glasses, and complete sake sets. These items are great for gifts or as a way to remember your visit. Nothing beats having a Japanese sake cup at home to pour yourself a little reminder of your travels.
