When our friend in Tokyo suggested we try a fancy Chinese restaurant called Series in Tokyo, we had no idea what to expect. Trust me, it was like nothing we’d ever experienced before. Picture this: a Chinese version of a Kaiseki meal, where every course is a little surprise, unfolding throughout the evening. This place isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a Michelin-starred journey through an umami-packed menu that really blew our minds.
Located in the lively neighborhood of Azabudai in Minato-ku, Tokyo, the Series feels like a hidden gem, even though it’s right there in the open. The whole concept is crafted by this super-talented head chef, Yuki Kaneko. He’s not just any chef; he is a visionary who decided to mash up traditional Cantonese methods with flavors from all corners of Asia—think Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore, and even Indonesia. The result? A mind-blowing fusion that sends your taste buds on a trip they won’t forget.
Chef Kaneko has got this knack for turning the familiar into something totally unexpected. Take his signature dish, for instance: grilled chicken wings stuffed with foie gras. I know, it sounds wild! He ditches the typical mochi rice and goes all in with foie gras, creating a flavor combo that’s both rich and perfectly balanced. It’s one of those dishes you have to taste to believe.
The real charm of Series is how they serve up the meal. It’s all about the presentation and the timing. Everyone is seated at the same time, and dishes come out in perfect sync, making sure we all get to enjoy each course together as if we’re all part of this exclusive culinary performance.
But Chef Kaneko isn’t just about the food; he’s a certified sommelier too. That means not only do you get an incredible meal, but each dish comes with a wine pairing that’s just as thoughtfully chosen as the food itself. It’s like each sip and bite has been designed to complement each other perfectly. They also serve Chinese drink, Shokoshu, which is included in the pairing menu. We will definitely try the pairing at our next visit.
Chef Kanko opened another restaurant, Kohou, in Roppongi. It seems this new restaurant is counter only and a little more expensive than Series. We look forward to trying this one in our future trip.
Settling into the elegant vibe of Series, the experience feels almost theatrical. Each course is like a chapter of a story, where every dish brings a new twist. From the zesty surprises in their dim sum to the succulent meats prepared with cutting-edge techniques, it’s clear that Chef Kaneko is all about pushing the envelope and redefining what Chinese cuisine can be.
And it’s not just about the food and the chef. The staff at Series are on another level. They’re not just serving you; they’re guiding you through your meal with this warm hospitality that makes the whole experience feel personal and special. They know exactly how to enhance your culinary journey, ensuring every moment at Series is memorable.
Located right in the heart of Tokyo, Series isn’t just a meal; it’s an adventure. It’s perfect for food lovers looking for something out of the ordinary and anyone eager to explore new flavors and culinary concepts. So, if you’re ever in Tokyo and looking for a place that will surprise and delight you in every way, make sure you check out Series. It’s more than just dining; it’s a celebration of innovation and tradition that you truly have to experience to understand.
