During our stay in Niseko, Japan, for a ski trip, we stumbled upon a delightful little cafe that quickly became one of the highlights of our visit. Just a 10-minute bus ride from our hotel, Milk Kobo is a dairy farm and pastry shop that is famous for its fresh dairy products, including cheese, cream, and desserts. What drew us there was the allure of their legendary cream puffs, and we were not disappointed.
As we approached Milk Kobo, we were immediately struck by its charming, rustic atmosphere. The cafe is nestled in a picturesque setting, surrounded by rolling hills and snow-capped peaks. It felt like stepping into a cozy, countryside retreat, away from the hustle and bustle of the ski resort. The friendly staff welcomed us warmly, and their enthusiasm for their craft was evident from the start.
The star of the show at Milk Kobo is undoubtedly their shu-cream, a delightful cream puff that we couldn’t get enough of. The first bite was pure bliss—the pastry was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, filled with the most heavenly vanilla custard made from the freshest cream. The cream was so fluffy and airy, with a rich milk flavor that lingered on our tongues. It was one of those moments where we looked at each other in amazement, silently agreeing that we had just discovered something truly special.
But the magic of Milk Kobo doesn’t stop at their shu-cream. Their menu is a treasure trove of other delectable treats. We sampled their cheesecakes, which were incredibly smooth and melted in our mouths, and their ice cream, which was a burst of creamy delight with every spoonful. We also tried their Milk Kobo pudding, made with fresh farm eggs and milk, which was simply divine. For those who prefer something savory, they offer grilled cheese sandwiches and cheese tarts that are just as delicious, striking the perfect balance between creamy and savory.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of our visit was getting to see behind the scenes. Large windows allowed us to watch the skilled pastry chefs at work, crafting these delightful treats with precision and care. It was mesmerizing to watch them in action, adding an extra layer of appreciation for the desserts we were savoring. The cafe also offers tours of the dairy farm, where you can learn about the milk and cream production process. Walking through the farm and seeing the dedication to quality and sustainability firsthand was an enlightening experience.
Before we left, we made sure to visit the small shop on the premises. It’s a perfect spot to pick up some souvenirs and take a piece of Milk Kobo home with you. We bought some freshly made cheeses and other dairy products, which made for great snacks later in our trip. They also offer baking classes, where you can learn to make their famous shu-cream or cheesecake yourself. Or, you can order them online! It’s a wonderful way to take a bit of the Milk Kobo magic back to your own kitchen.
Our visit to Milk Kobo was one of the most memorable parts of our trip to Niseko. It’s not just about the delicious desserts, but the whole experience—the warm, welcoming atmosphere, the opportunity to learn about the dairy farming process, and the chance to see master pastry chefs at work. It’s a place that combines the best of culinary artistry with rustic charm, making it a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to Niseko.
If you ever find yourself in this beautiful part of Japan, we highly recommend taking a short trip to Milk Kobo. It’s a delightful escape that offers a taste of the countryside along with some of the best desserts you’ll ever have. Trust us, you won’t regret it.
