Located near Yasaka Shrine, Kikunoi Honten is not just a renowned traditional restaurant; it is a world of Japanese Omotenashi (hospitality). Kikunoi has been a Michelin three-star restaurant for the past several years. The chef, Yoshihiro Murata, is the third generation chef at the Kikunoi, and a major contributor to washoku traditional Japanese cuisine being recognized by UNESCO.
We often visit here for Bill’s birthday. Their menu changes monthly to serve the seasonal indigents and all guests are seated in private rooms. Kikunoi Honten’s collection of private dining rooms offers an intimate and exclusive setting for guests to savor their kaiseki experience. The view of the Japanese garden from the room, the painting on the scroll, and the beautiful flower arrangement add exquisite ambiance to our kaiseki meal experience. The plates, bowls, and glasses are specially made for the Kikunoi meals.
What truly sets Kikunoi Honten apart is the ever-evolving kaiseki menu. Chef Murata and his team take pride in showcasing the freshest, most exquisite seasonal ingredients in each meticulously prepared course. From succulent sashimi that melts in your mouth to grilled dishes that emanate a smoky, tantalizing aroma, and steamed creations that transport you to a world of subtlety and refinement – each dish is an artistic masterpiece in its own right. Even though we visit every June for Bill’s birthday, we’ve never seen the same dish twice.
Chef Yoshihiro Murata, the third-generation owner-chef of Kikunoi Honten, is a culinary luminary in his own right. His passion for preserving and promoting traditional Japanese cuisine has earned him international acclaim. The restaurant boasts three Michelin stars, a testament to the exceptional quality of its dining experience. In 2018, Chef Murata received the prestigious title of “Living National Treasure” of Japan, an honor that underscores his dedication and mastery of the culinary arts.
Kikunoi Honten is not just a restaurant; it is an embodiment of history, culture, and culinary excellence. With each course meticulously crafted and each ingredient carefully selected, it becomes a living testament to the rich heritage of Kyoto and Japan. This dedication to preserving and promoting the country’s culinary legacy is palpable in every bite and every moment spent within its walls.
