When I first moved to the US, I began learning the Japanese Tea Ceremony as a way to reconnect with my cultural roots. This journey led me to deeply appreciate Uji—a place that quickly captured my heart as a tea student. Uji is renowned for producing the highest quality matcha, essential for authentic Japanese tea practices. Bill and I finally had the opportunity to visit this cherished city, and it left us completely awestruck with its vibrant yet quaint community.
Uji, tucked away in the southern part of Kyoto Prefecture, is a small city that boasts an array of stunning sites and rich history. One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the Byodoin, a UNESCO World Heritage Site established back in 998. The temple’s Phoenix Hall, adorned with an iconic phoenix statue, is a masterpiece of religious architecture. We wandered around for hours, mesmerized by the lush gardens and the painstakingly crafted details that each building flaunted.
Not far from there, we explored the Ujigami Shrine, reputed to be the oldest shrine still standing in Japan. Built in the 11th century, the shrine’s unique architectural style and its tranquil natural setting made it a perfect spot for reflection. Strolling through its serene grounds, we felt a deep sense of peace and reverence.
Of course, a visit to Uji wouldn’t be complete without delving into its famed tea culture. We indulged ourselves in various local tea houses, savoring different types of matcha and sencha. Each sip of Uji’s renowned green tea seemed to tell a story of tradition and meticulous care—a true testament to why it’s considered the best in Japan.
Another unforgettable experience was our leisurely walk along the Uji River. Lined with cherry blossoms, the river was a spectacular sight during the blossom season. The delicate pink flowers, mirrored in the crystal-clear water, created a breathtaking scene. As we walked, we talked about how fortunate we were to experience such sublime beauty in person, a moment of beauty that felt like it was lifted straight from a painting.
Throughout our visit, Uji not only gave us a deeper appreciation for the art of Japanese tea but also allowed us to step into a world where history and culture converge so beautifully. We left with our hearts full and a newfound connection to a place that both of us now hold dear. As we said our goodbyes to Uji, we knew this was not just a trip—it was a pilgrimage that we would carry with us forever.
