Kyoto, a city renowned for its rich history and cultural heritage, also offers a vibrant cocktail scene. This article introduces six of Kyoto’s cocktail bars we recommend: Bar Talisker, El Tesoro, Bar Rocking Chair, Turquoise Bar, L’Escamoteur, and Bar Sansui. Each bar has its unique charm and specialty, catering to diverse tastes and preferences.
Bar Talisker
We visited Bar Talisker for the first time in 2023 and it quickly became our favorite bar! Located in the Gion, it is a haven for whisky lovers. With its warm, wooden interior and extensive selection of Scotch whiskies, this bar offers a cozy retreat. The knowledgeable bartender guides guests through an impressive range of single malts and blended whiskies, making it a perfect spot for both beginners and connoisseurs. We discovered this bar from the customers sitting next to us at Gion Nishimura. I enjoyed the highball which is known as no-ice highball listening to the owner’s Jazz vinal collection.
El Tesoro
A hidden gem in Gion, El Tesoro presents a fusion of Japanese precision. This intimate bar, known for its tequila and mezcal-based cocktails, provides a lively atmosphere. The bar was named after my husband’s favorite tequila, El Tesoro, which is considered one of the best tequila in the world. The ambiance compliments the exotic drink menu. “The Aztec,” a popular cocktail choice, combines mezcal with homemade spicy syrup, delivering a unique and bold flavor profile. We had a great time talking with the owner comparing the notes of the tequila flavor profiles.
Bar Rocking Chair
A modern and stylish cocktail bar, Bar Rocking Chair stands out with its creative mixology and relaxed ambiance. The bar’s interior, combining rustic wood with sleek metal accents, creates a contemporary and welcoming space. Signature cocktails here are crafted with seasonal ingredients and homemade syrups, ensuring fresh and innovative flavors. The “Kyoto Garden,” a refreshing gin-based cocktail with hints of yuzu and shiso, is a must-try.
Turquoise Bar
As we are from New Mexico, the name Turquoise piqued our interest. An elegant and serene spot, Turquoise Bar is ideal for us to finish the day with elegant cocktails. The bar is located on Kiyama-cho Street a couple of blocks down from Shijo Street. Specializing in classic cocktails with a twist, the bartenders at Turquoise Bar excel in creating perfectly balanced drinks. I enjoy ordering a cocktail with the fused liquor flavored by the owner.
L’Escamoteur
We were there right at the opening to ensure our seats at the bar. With its whimsical, vintage circus-themed interior, L’Escamoteur offers a magical escape from the ordinary. This bar is famous for its theatrical presentation and inventive cocktails. Each drink is a work of art, both in taste and appearance, making L’Escamoteur a must-visit for those seeking an extraordinary night out. The “Illusionist,” a visually stunning and delicious cocktail, embodies the bar’s creative spirit.
Bar Sansui
A cozy and traditional Japanese bar, Bar Sansui provides an intimate setting for savoring expertly crafted cocktails. Located in the middle of Gion, the bar is decorated with paintings by the legendary artist Kaneko Kuniyoshi; I felt like we were in the art gallery.
Kyoto’s cocktail bars, each with its unique charm and specialty, offer memorable experiences for visitors and locals. Whether you’re looking for a cozy spot to savor world-class whiskies, a lively setting to enjoy exotic flavors or a serene place to indulge in classic cocktails, these bars cater to every preference. We recommend these bars as you can immerse yourself in the diverse and vibrant culture of Kyoto’s nightlife. Each bar promises an unforgettable evening filled with delightful tastes and enchanting atmospheres, making them must-visit destinations for any cocktail enthusiast traveling to Kyoto.
